I think badblocks are handled at the drive level anymore.

Both with SCSI and IDE.  

If you look at a old drive and a new one, you will see on the old one a list of bad sectors as it left the factory.

On new drives, they don't show it because the drive internally maps around the bad sectors.

AFAIK, if a drive starts having end-user observable bad sectors, it is time to replace it.
